Smaller, but not less smart: KNX RF as a trend for apartments and smaller homes

Thanks to last year’s insights from the study of the KNX Planning Guide, we have a pretty good grasp on the current situation of home automation and the desires of (future) KNX homeowners. Coincidentally , we also spotted some new trends that might be appearing soon. Up until now, home automation has always been associated with luxurious villas, but that’s about to change as smart technology becomes accessible to all households.

Numbers never lie, so let’s speak some facts. About 52% of respondents planning to implement KNX into their home, are doing so in a home larger than 150 sqm. Meaning the remaining 48% will be automating their home smaller than 150 sqm. 40% of which even plan on starting their KNX journey in a home smaller than 100 sqm, which is the size of a standard two-bedroom apartment.

Speaking of, 18% of respondents specified they’d wish to integrate KNX into their apartment. With housing prices almost doubling in the past decade, apartment living has gained more popularity than ever. Simultaneously, renting has become more common in the past couple of years, with almost one-third of people in the EU renting their home.

The opportunities of making smaller spaces smart with KNX

Is it possible to automate your home without renovating?

KNX’s decentralized smart home system has been around for more than 30 years and offers homeowners a vast ecosystem of devices coming from an extensive list of manufacturers. KNX’s global standard and its green cable are a staple in the automation community. But for renters or homeowners with a smaller budget or other restrictions, breaking out walls or fully renovating their homes in order to make it smart is not always a possibility.

One way to make smaller homes or rentals smart is using out-of-the-box solutions, like smart devices that don’t require any hardwiring. Not only are they a way of using the available space more efficiently, but they’re also more easily installed if you’re a bit technical minded. For those looking for a future-proof solution that fits your smart home needs and preferences seamlessly, KNX RF is the way to go.

KNX RF for your soon-to-be smart home

As mentioned earlier, KNX is known for its green cable. But in 2023 KNX introduced KNX RF as their wireless solution for home automation. Meaning KNX enthusiasts who are not able to implement the famous green cable will still be able to enjoy the future-proof standard in their homes.

Known KNX manufacturers like Gira and Jung offer KNX RF systems to implement KNX easily into your home, with nothing more than your 230 V installation. Allowing you to control every aspect, like blinds, lighting, temperature and more, in your new KNX smart home without having to undergo any big renovations.

Smart apartments: A trend or the future of housing?

With the ever increasing popularity of home automation, people in all kinds of homes are looking for ways to increase the comfort of their day-to-day lives. Meaning that not only homeowners, but also renters are looking for ways to make their homes smarter. Whether they’re living in a big 3-bedroom house or a studio apartment.

As of now, it is not easy to predict how the housing market will take shape over the coming years. One thing we do know is that small homeowners and renters have been showing an increased interest in creating their KNX smart home and expanding their homes to fit their lives seamlessly.
